Brookfield Farm
A 200kWp agricultural solar system across barn rooftops in North Yorkshire — delivering carbon-neutral operations and £24,000 in annual energy savings.
Background
Brookfield Farm is a 400-acre mixed arable and livestock operation in North Yorkshire. With high electricity usage from grain drying, refrigeration, milking and EV tractors, energy costs had become one of the farm's largest overhead items.
The installation
Alliant Energy designed a 200kWp system across three barn rooftops using 400 DMEGC 500W panels. The phased installation was completed between harvests to minimise disruption to farm operations. A 100kWh battery system was also installed to capture surplus generation for evening irrigation pumping.
Outcomes
The system generates approximately 195,000 kWh/year — covering 85% of the farm's annual electricity demand. At current grid prices, this delivers £24,000/year in savings with a 4.5-year payback. The farm now exports surplus generation in winter months under a commercial SEG arrangement.
